PADMAVATHI

A century old Tamil Novel translated into English considering that a novel was a novelty at the time. The format is simple story telling without any pretentions. It is a period piece. There might be some reflected social situations as available in then brahmanical society. Still the story is a product of fertile imaginations of the author. In more than a century the Tamil Brahmin community has progressed little. More and more sought and got western or english education. However, the brahmin origin and traditions are seeping in. The egoism and arrogance on the part of a majority are in view everyday as in the days of Padmavathi novel. May be it is the trend of the times when world wide religion, ethnic and other identities are being reiterated, re-interpreted finally coming to some kind of clash of civilizations.
